The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Green Power Partnership has officially recognized the University of Illinois as a Green Power Partner for purchasing electricity from clean, renewable sources - see attached news release.
The total electricity charged by Ameren to campus for the Building Research Council went down by 13,760 kWh/year from FY13 to FY14, which is in some part due to the solar array - see file.
During Earth Month 2014, Reach Studios in Lancing Michigan contacted the university sustainability staff about our successful storm drain murals project. They are seeking to do a similar project in Michigan, and requested our advice. Eliana Brown responded with lessons learned and encouragement for their similar project.
The iCAP Working Group (iWG) met on April 2, 2015, to discuss and start the assessment of the SWATeam recommendation PWR001 Zero Waste Coordinator. Their official comment on the recommendation was:
"We recommend that the PWR SWATeam consider whether it would be advisable to split this into two recommendations: one for F&S (focused on recycling and waste handling), and one for OBFS (focused on purchasing)."
The recommendation was, subsequently, returned to the PWR SWATeam on April 14th, 2015.

Arbor Day Celebration Plan
MBJ 4/3/2015
Arbor Day Celebration: In support of designating the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a Tree Campus USA through the Arbor Day Foundation, the Chancellor is proclaiming Friday April 24, 2015 as a day of celebration. An Arbor Day Celebration will occur on the Main Quad at 11:30, with the planting of a new tree near the Henry Administration Building. Please join Associate Chancellor Mike DeLorenzo to hear the proclamation, watch the tree planting process, and participate in a fun trivia game to earn a personal tree sapling.
Location of the Event: The tree location is circled in orange on the aerial image below. The area for the celebration is designated in orange as #8 on the map image below, in front of the Henry Administration Building.
Schedule of the Celebration: There will be a hole pre-dug for the tree on Friday morning. The hole will be fenced off to prevent the danger of falling. Everything for placing the tree (equipment, tree, soil) will be placed near the tree location by 11:15. A podium, sound system, and table for the trivia game will be in place and arranged by 11:15. The official event agenda will occur from 11:30-12:30. Take down of the event items will occur early afternoon.
Agenda for the Celebration: The agenda includes a welcome, proclamation, speech, tree planting, and trivia game.
Publicity for the Celebration: The event will be listed on the Earth Week calendar of events from SECS and iSEE. F&S will send out a press release and an e-week. Invitations will be sent to sustainability groups and appropriate academic departments. Al Stratman will invite people to the event, during the Earth Day master plan presentation.
We are scheduled to place the new recycling barrels on the Quad next week on Thursday, April 9.
Bart (ISTC) talked to Ron (Grounds) about reversing the bins on the Ikenberry project after one week. The project actually started the morning of April 1 so it would be great to have the bin placement reversed on the morning of April 8th. This means moving the traditional bins to the current location of Housing’s recycling station and vice versa. On the morning of April 15th everything can be returned to normal.
Dear iCAP Working Group Members,
As a reminder, we will be meeting this Thursday at 1:30 (and also next Thursday, 4/9, at 1:30).
This week we will discuss the timeline for completing our work on the iCAP, and then turn our attention to the 7 attached formal recommendations we've received from the Transportation and Purchasing, Waste, and Recycling SWATeams. Please review these in advance of the meeting, so that we can discuss them most efficiently. If you will not be able to join us due to a schedule conflict, please email me in advance if you have any particular concerns.
Next week (4/9), we'll be joined by Kent Reifsteck and Mike Larson from F&S, and also Scott Willenbrock from the Energy Generation SWATeam, so that we can discuss what the iCAP should say about charting a pathway for clean energy for our campus.
Thanks,
Ben

Several recommendations were discussed from the Transportation SWATeam and the Puchasing, Waste, and Recycling SWATeam.
The University requested bids from vendors in FY15 for the purchase of 70 4-loop and 60 5-loop bike racks. RJ Thomas Manufacturing Co. Inc. were one of those who responded to this bid. The University received these new 70 4-loop and 60 5-loop bike racks from this vendor in Spring 2015.
A copy of the agenda from the PWR SWATeam meeting on March 30, 2015.
The PWR SWATeam submitted a recommendation to the iWG stating, "We recommend that campus buildings add adequate recycling stations and make efforts to avoid having isolated landfill bins."
See attached the SWATeam recommendation, PWR003 Recycling Bins, complete with comments from all the PWR SWATeam members.
The PWR SWATeam submitted a recommendation, PWR002 Standard Signage, stating, "We recommend that campus buildings standardize the signage on landfill and recycling bins. The signage should be color-coded and consistent throughout campus. Using the color scheme created by Recycle Across America is advised."
See attached the SWATeam recommendation PWR002 Standard Signage complete with comments from all the PWR SWATeam members.
The PWR SWATeam submitted a recommendation, PWR001 Zero Waste Coordinator, stating, "Hire a Zero Waste Coordinator to communicate and implement waste reduction strategies, to meet the commitments of the iCAP."
See attached the SWATeam recommendation, PWR001 Zero Waste Coordinator, complete with comments from all the PWR SWATeam members.
The Transportation SWATeam submitted a recommendation, Trans001 TEM_DMI, to the iWG stating, "The transportation SWATeam recommends that the data for faculty/staff travel be collected through the campus Travel and Expense Management (TEM) and Division of Management Information (DMI) system. The program should require that faculty/staff (or the unit head) report travel purposes and funding sources when they request travel expense reimbursement via TEM and the DMI manage and analyze the database."
See attached the SWATeam recommendation, Trans001 TEM_DMI, complete with comments from all the Transportation SWATeam members.
