A status report on the Red Oak Rain Garden project by Team Leader Eliana Brown.
Eco-Olympics student-led energy-conservation competition designed to engage, educate and motivate energy saving habits amongst Housing residents is in its final week with the top 3 teams pushing to be 1st! We have surpassed last year’s individual participation total of 142 registered and are currently at 278 ( a new participation record).
Hi All,
Whoot whoot!
A day short of the half-way point for the competition and we blew right past the previous yearly total records for participation of 142 & 182, These kids are making it happen!
We were negotiating with private certified and Greek housing, but ran out of time. Next year we should be able to add them and clear over 1000 students participating.

This is or will be running in all the halls, which gives us prime advertising so lets really pull our efforts together this final week before break! Get with the hall councils and building captains to build momentum going into the start of the competition. – Paul Foote
Located just south of Allen Hall/LAR and west of McKinley Health Center, the Red Oak Rain Garden solves local flooding issues while providing an outdoor space for the UIUC community. This SSC grant provides support for sidewalk modifications and additions, expanding pedestrian and cyclist transportation while strengthening flood control. The project team will also install benches to encourage community members to use the space throughout the year. For outreach, the project team will host a ribbon cutting event that celebrates the upgraded rain garden. Similarly, individuals can follow the rain garden @RainGardenUIUC on all social media platforms.
iSEE will provide up to $1,000 toward trophies, printing costs, and/or the software needed for building monitors in support of Eco-Olympics this spring.

Spring 2018 semesterly report submitted to the Student Sustainability Committee for the Red Oak Rain Garden 2.0 project.
SSC approved a $200 micro grant to Eco-Olympics for digital signage in the residential halls. These signs will display progress and energy savings.
"Eco-Olympics is an energy saving competition between the dorms. Residents sign up for teams which then participate in activities led by hall captains to earn points. Energy use also translates into points, and less energy used means more points. At the end of the three week competition, the team with the most points is declared the winner and members of that team receive a prize."
On January 19, 2018, the ECBS SWATeam discussed updates on the Freezer Challenge, Eco-Olympics, and the Illini Lights Out program. They also brainstormed methods for the departments to become more invested in energy conservation. They are broaching the idea of the departments receiving payback for their participation or possibly charging departments for their energy usage. The team members will research into peer institutions and what they are doing on this issue. The ECBS SWATeam also wishes to build more awareness for energy conservation in residential facilities and in the campus community.
Red Oak Rain Garden 2.0 restores the original Red Oak Rain Garden that was established 10 years ago to address the flooding issue between McKinley Health Center and Allen Hall. Students will work alongside faculty, staff, and community members to plant specific plants that provide multi-season flooding protection. This project aims to increase awareness surrounding horticulture and natural flooding management while addressing an infrastructural issue on campus.
The Student Sustainability Committee provides financial support to purchase plants, signage, training materials, and hardscape. The plant species are specifically chosen for maximum efficiency and learning. Likewise, the signage will allow the passerby to identify native species. University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners will support the garden while students are on academic breaks and provide Red Bison, a student-led organization, with rain garden training.

The first issue of the F&S Insider includes an article about the Red Oak Rain Garden design efforts this summer.
The Energy Conservation and Building Standards SWATeam gathered for the first meeting of the FY2017 on September 12. The team briefly reflected on the progress made thus far (e.g. Zero Net Growth policy was passed in 2015 and a 30% campus-wide energy reduction goal was achieved 3 years early). Updates on current projects were also presented, such as on the new leadership of the Illini Lights Out program.
Eco-Olympics is a competition focused on bringing hall residents together to make environmental changes that make a lasting impact on the community. Hall-based teams compete with each other in energy reduction efforts. Teams get points for energy reduction per resident as well as the number of residents that sign up, number of events held, social media posts, and how many people attend each event.
