Allen Hall volunteers express interest in providing a new sign
The Allen Hall Board of Activities (AHBOA) has interest in volunteering for this project. They would like to potentially help fund a new info sign since the one that was there is gone.

"I walk by that rain garden almost every day and have been picking up trash, etc. It would be great if we could get the original plan from Dr. Tony Endress that shows what was planted. From my observations, the rocks need replenished, possibly removal of fabric underlayment, and, if we had the plan, we could do a census of surviving plants. The Native Plant sale is coming up in May and if we had a plan by then, we could buy and plant replacements. I am willing to monitor when students aren't available and work with them in whatever capacity they are anticipating.

On the agenda at the ECBS SWATeam meeting:
1) Discussion of recommendation process as developed and described in the iCAP;
2) Illini Lights Out final planning for 10th of February;
3) Update on fume hood work;
4) North America Laboratory Freezer Challenge update; 5) Planning for Earth Week.
It’s time for promoting and encouraging energy conservation in the halls through Eco-Olympics energy competition, we are displaying the coveted trophy in various locations around housing starting this week through the end of the competition. The grand prize, a catered banquet is secured and awaiting the winning hall!
New to this year’s competition!
1) We are asking Chancellor Jones to be the signatory for the leadership certificates this year.
2) We are also supporting a participation prize of $200-$500 for the hall with the most and best participation efforts, your thoughts on this and more on that in a minute.
3) All Eco-Olympics meetings will be held at your individual hall, accommodating busy schedules and making it easier to attend.
4) Housing is helping with marketing support for the competition and individual halls.
5) We have been working with campus utilities to identify meters that are impacted by students and only recording energy usage from these meters to better gauge the teams efforts.
Is your hall competing?
If you have not seen, flyers posted, group meetings held, plans for participation events or heard conversation about Eco-Olympics it is time to stir the pot and get your residents in contact with us.
This leaves us with nine (9) buildings competing at various levels of effort, we are shooting for 12-15 buildings this year and would like your help in making this happen?
If your hall is not listed as “committed” help us get the word out by contacting us, we will make arrangements for a presentation/recruiting opportunity and marketing materials to be distributed.
Your input is Greatly appreciated, this year we are measuring participation efforts and awarding a financial incentive (between $200-$500) to the hall with the highest level of participation. This will be measured by number of team member’s signup with Eco-Olympics from each hall, number of events held in the hall, and number of participants at each event, verified through organization representatives, and photos of the event.
What we would like from you is to let us know your thoughts on the idea of motivating participation with a $200-$500 incentive for your residents. This prize could be used for the students in any way they like, of course we would encourage it to be used for sustainability and energy conservation efforts, but that would not be mandatory.
We are looking forward to our best and biggest competition ever!
Thank you
Paul Foote
Think Globally. Act Locally.
On the agenda at the ECBS SWATeam meeting:
1) Associate Director for Campus Sustainability at iSEE replacement;
2) Status of recommendation for Green Lab Coordinator;
3) Discussion: How the SWATeam recommendation process working for us;
4) FYI: Discussions are ongoing on campus about higher expectations for building standards;
5) Illini Light Out” will transition to iSEE and dates for the rest of the year;
6) Certified Green Office Program. How ECBS SWATeam can promote this;

Students at Allen Hall volunteered to help with maintenance of the Red Oak Rain Garden. They offered to take pictures of the existing garden, to document its current condition.
Community member, Karen Folk, inquired about the potential to establish the Red Oak Rain Garden as an official volunteer location for the Master Naturalists and Master Gardeners to help maintain. Eliana Brown, currently a Water Resources Outreach Specialist, asked Superintendent of Grounds, Ryan Welch. Ryan indicated that he would be willing to approve the volunteer program, and the first step is to define a Memo of Understanding (MOU) describing the volunteer work to be done. He said, "I am agreeable to this, as long as the work is done strictly by volunteers and there is a MOU for the maintenance responsibilities between F&S and the Master Gardeners."
At the ECBS SWATeam meeting this week, Sam Wilson, a grad student in Communication, presented his ongoing research efforts on fume hood behaviors, which will tie into the development of our Green Labs Initiative. Big Picture Recommendation discussion continued as the team worked on making clear connections to iCAP 2015 in the document, which is set to be submitted by the end of next week. The online Energy Dashboard has been updated, courtesy of Mike Marquissee. Eco-Olympics results indicated competing buildlings across campus achieved up to a 10.6% reduction in energy usage (Lundgren Hall). Grad student Anna Tanaglia presented the success of public speaking sections (CMN 101) that focused on campus sustainability; students seemed to enjoy these topics and some have expressed interest in getting more involved in campus sustainability efforts. Claudia presented a social marketing campaign class project on student involvement in campus sustainability efforts, the findings of which may guide future campus engagement efforts.

Hello,
My name is Rachel Jacoby. I am the Philanthropy Chair for ActGreen, the first green business organization at the University of Illinois in Urbana Champaign. Brian Yeung is planning to enter energy use data for some of the University Housing residence halls into the EPA Portfolio Manager. He is going to use the same username and password as Nishant is using for other campus buildings.
The major goal of this report is to quantify and qualify the impacts of Campus Red Oak Rain Garden project from University of Illinois on various metrics, including environmental, economic and educational contexts and to make suggestions for plan implementations of future projects. However, due to limited quantitative information, suggested impacts analysis is primarily based on literature reviews.
Hello Big Ten CCN competitors!
CCN officially ended on April 25th and the results were published yesterday. Congratulations to Penn State University on taking the lead of Big Ten Unplugged with an overall 3.3% electricity reduction during the competition. Penn State University was also a winner in the poster category.
Taking 2nd place was Ohio State University with a 3.1% reduction. 3rd place goes to University of Wisconsin - Madison with a 2.2% reduction. Congrats to our top 3 Big Ten Unplugged winners!
I'd like to propose that we continue a Big Ten Challenge in the future not only for CCN but any nationwide competition focused on resource reduction. I will propose a meeting for us some time in late summer to outline what future competitions within Big Ten might look like.

Fellow Big Ten CCN participants,
OSU is hoping to benchmark our results against our peer institutions, not for marketing, but as an internal measurement. Lucid was kind enough to provide our website hits when we asked them to. I’d like to share with the group this information in hopes that you’ll share yours with us.
We had 8 halls competing with a combined 5000 or so residents. Results of our website hits are in the attached CSV file. Competition dates were 2/10-3/3. This is our first year, and we’re hoping to do better in the future, of course.
ECO-OLYMPICS is an energy competition between 20+ residence halls on campus.
Our goal is to engage, educate, and motivate students/employees/professors to change their behavior, and have a good time while doing it.
Eco-Olympics is part of a nationwide program called Campus Conservation Nationals 2014, as well as a mini Big Ten competition FMI: www.competetoreduce.org/ccn. Trophies and prizes will be given to the successful halls.
What you can do to help:
You and your team members play a critical role in this incredible opportunity to make a difference in campus energy usage.
This is the inaugural competition, so we will be creating a yearly tradition to leave behind and impact future students here at UIUC. The participants will also be able to include this on their resume as leadership, volunteering, team building and/or group participation.
There will be meetings in March leading up to the competition that is scheduled for March 30-April 22, these meetings will train participants, go over the guidelines, and assign buildings to each team.
Thank you for your interest and participation in Eco Olympics, a Great opportunity making a difference locally and globally.
