Projects Updates for collection: 2010 iCAP Projects

  1. RLF Occupancy Sensors FY12

    Ten buildings on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus were selected to receive RLF funding for occupancy sensors in FY12. In order from top priority to lowest priority, the buildings that received funding are Gregory Hall, the Foreign Languages Building, the Agriculture Engineering Sciences Building, Newmark Laboratory, the Rehabilitation Education Center, the Education Building, the Law Building, the Water Survey Buildings, Noyes Laboratory, and Freer Hall. The University will now proceed to implementation of occupancy sensors in all of the above buildings.

    Gregory Hall, the Foreign Languages Building, Newmark Laboratory, the Rehabilitation Education Center, Noyes Laboratory, and Freer Hall have also been selected to receive HVAC occupancy sensors.

  3. Illinois Business Consulting report - economic analysis

    Biomass co-firing pilot at Abbott Power Plant

    The central question posed to Illinois Business Consulting (IBC) is as follows: what would be the economic impact of replacing 10% of the university’s coal intake with wood chips?  After extensive research, analysis, and calculation it is the opinion of IBC that the cogeneration of energy with coal and wood chips is not economically feasible.  The initiative has been deemed not economically feasible because wood chips are more expensive on the basis of energy content, transportation costs will increase due to biomass, and infrastructure modification expenses necessary for the operational changes are significant.

  5. Illinois Business Consulting report - carbon impact

    In 2012, F&S hired Illinois Business Consulting to evaluate the following question for Abbott Power Plant: "Can the overall carbon footprint be decreased by using 10% of biomass in place of 10% of coal?"  The report and executive summary are attached here.

  6. Final Bike Sharing Feasibility Study Submitted to SSC

    The final report for the Bike Sharing Feasibility Study was submitted to SSC. The study recommends the following three tiered approach to bicycle sharing on the Urbana-Champaign campus: 

    1. Bikes available for employees – The small existing program at Kinesiology and Community Health should be replicated at departments throughout campus. The program needs to be approved by Legal Counsel, Risk Management, Purchasing, and interested Colleges.  Then it should be promoted to departments, to encourage them to invest in bicycles for their employees and provide them with a simple support system for maintenance and tracking.
       
    2. Bikes available for short-term rentals – As an interim solution until the campus can handle a large-scale bike sharing program, the small existing program at Campus Recreation should be expanded with support from the Student Sustainability Committee.  They should increase the number of bicycles available, make the program self-sufficient financially, and market the program to visitors, conference attendees, faculty, staff, and students. A similar program could be investigated for the Illini Union. 
       
    3. Bike solutions for students and the public – Before this campus is ready to pursue a public bike sharing system, we must first address the issues regarding degraded infrastructure and the need for more bike safety education. Once these issues have been resolved, the campus should renew consideration of several options for bike sharing, such as bicycle libraries, kiosk systems, and GPS-enabled community bikes.

  10. Status Update meeting with Mike Lyon

    Amelia, Morgan, and Mike Lyon met this morning to review the current status of this project.  Morgan gave an overview of what has happened with bicycling this summer, and Amelia described the LINC class projects for this fall.  We will set a meeting with Risk Management, Legal, and Kinesiology to review the departmental bike sharing process.  We will also set a meeting with Purchasing to identify the correct process for the purchase of UI owned bicycles.

    Hello All,

    The work on these buildings should start in the next couple weeks. The Craft & Trades are getting past their busy season since school has started.

    The only item I see on Tom’s list that may be an issue is the tuck pointing at the Native American House 1206 W. Nevada. I will have to speak with our Brickmasons Foreman to see if this can be done.

    As for the Speech Communication building let me see what the future plans for its use are.

  12. Update from Mckenzie Beverage

    Hi Mark and Morgan,

    I met with Thomas today and we discussed the kits and email to be sent to the buildings. He is waiting on confirmation from Mark for the building upgrades. Do you know when those will begin? He would like to list the specific upgrades that will be made for each building when he contacts them. I have attached his list here. Please let him know if all of these will be able to happen and when.

    Additionally, Thomas was informed that the Speech Communications building is not occupied this semester. Do you know how long it will be unoccupied? If it is longer than the fall semester, Thomas suggested reconsidering completing the upgrades.

    Let me know if you would like to set up a meeting to discuss these items. Otherwise, Thomas will be needing the energy usage information from before and after the upgrades to include that in his final report. Thanks!

  13. $250,000 available in FY13; allocation process TBD

    Mike Marquissee confirmed the funding available for allocation in FY13 is $250,000. Doris Reeser stated that there will be no AFMFA allocation meeting this year.  It was decided that the call for proposals should wait until there is at least $1M to allocate from this fund.  Therefore, there will not be a selection process during FY13.

  14. invoices to pay RSOs

    I have attached the invoices for the RSOs. I have been informed by the RSO account tech that you need to make the check payable to the University of Illinois. You can put their RSO name in the memo or write c/o after the University of Illinois with their RSO name. Whichever works easiest for you. Once you have done this, please send the checks to me (my mail code is listed below). I will contact the students and give them instructions on how to cash these checks. Please let me know if you need anything further.

    Thank you so much for participating in the 2011-2012 Weatherization Program. Your incentives for participating in the program will be available at the Office of Registered Organizations on the day classes begin. Please ask for me when you arrive.

    When you come to pick up your check you will need to take it to the Cashier’s window in 100 Henry Administration Building. You will need your 4-digit RSO account number (ACCOUNT #1-90__ __ __ __-389005-307900-199000) in order to deposit the check into your RSO account. Your treasurer should know this number. If your treasurer does not know this number, he or she may request if from the Office of Registered Organizations (please note that only the treasurer may request this number).

  19. Guest Lecturers, staff and student teams work together

    Curriculum

    Staff gave a guest lecturer presentation to the Urban Planning / Civil Engineering UP430 class, regarding active transportation programs; met with a student team from Professor Rockett’s renewable energy course to discuss rooftop solar opportunities on campus; and gave a guest lecturer presentation to an Architecture class about the iCAP and sustainability initiatives on campus.
