Bicycle Registration was open for public on July 20, 2020. Currently due to the pandemic, all Shield pick-up locations are closed, so for those who register and want the 529 Shield now, they must contact bike@illinois.edu to arrange for a time and place to collect the Shield. Otherwise, Sarthak Prasad would reach out to them when the Shield pick-up locations are open.
The bicycle registration page on the Bike at Illinois (bike.illinois.edu) to reflect the new changes. The new system will be available to the public from July 20, 2020. This page now contains information about the importance of registration, new bicycle registration system, how to register, and the 529 Shield (registration tag) pick up locations. The Purchase Order to purchase the Community-Plan of the Project 529's bicycle registration system was approved and the contract was sent to the vendor via email (due to the pandemic) on May 1, 2020. The contract would begin on July 1, 2020 and end on June 30, 2021. Sarthak Prasad will work with the F&S IT department to plan and prepare to use the new system and the bicycle registration fee.
The trial period for the Project 529 system will end on June 30, 2020.

The Campus Bike Center is bringing several Bike Maintenance classes and Group Rides for Spring 2020 for free!
Facilities & Services (F&S) updated the Near Far Without a Car flyer (or CarFree Flyer) in August 2019. This flyer lists the alternative modes of transportation available at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. It also consists of essential safety information, such as SafeRides, SafeWalks, DRES shuttles, Bicycle Safety Tips, Bike Registration, etc.
F&S has partnered with several departments across the University to distribute the information in this flyer to thousands of old and new students. For example, this flyer will be distributed to more than 3,000 incoming international students during their mandatory check-in at the International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS). F&S has also partnered with MTD to distribute this flyer to students at the Quad Day.

All, The doors were opened! I repeat: The doors were opened! It was finally warm enough. Turns out our coat rack is slightly too tall for the garage to be opened. We figured that out the hard way. Still very nice to get some fresh air in here.
Last week we had our first Fix-a-Flat class. Unfortunately, no one showed up. It was pretty bad weather and a new program offering so for next week I’ll put up some signs and talk it up to people who come in to the Center.
Our student staff also hosted their first Friday Ride. It was still raining at that point but most of the staff partook. As they left I think I saw one or two riders who weren’t staff—that’s a good sign! We’ll see how it goes from here. Warmer, nicer weather and a couple weeks more of promotion should only help!
This week is our collaborative Bike@Illinois meeting to discuss strategic planning for implementation of broader bicycle-friendly efforts on campus! More on that next week.

Bike at Illinois (bike.illinois.edu) is the campus community’s comprehensive bicycling resource, helping everyone have a safer, more sustainable, and comfortable biking experience on campus. The site’s user-friendly, responsive, and accessible design makes getting information convenient while on the go using smartphones and tablets.
Facilities & Services (F&S) Active Transportation Coordinator Lily Wilcock said, “Bike at Illinois online was designed to bring all campus bicycle information into one easy-to-find location. The response and feedback to the site have been excellent, and students were very excited about it on Quad Day.”
The Bike at Illinois website includes detailed sections on registering bikes, campus bike rules, and the campus bike center, plus updates on news and upcoming events.
F&S Executive Director Mohamed Attalla said, “I am excited to see us launch this new website to showcase and celebrate the incredible efforts underway for bicycling on campus. The potential for greater outreach and engagement with students, faculty, staff, and community will help support our continued designation as a Bicycle Friendly University.”
Dockless Bike Sharing Update
VeoRide, based in West Lafayette, Indiana, is the first company to receive a Concession Agreement with the university for deploying dockless bike share bicycles in this area. The company will offer a fleet of 500 turquoise bikes, the maximum number allowed by the pilot program, throughout Champaign, Urbana, and on campus. The dockless bike sharing program will provide individuals with the ability to rent a bicycle through a smartphone app. Users can park the self-locking bicycles at any bike rack across campus or in the cities. Creative Services hosted a kick-off meeting for the Bike at Illinois website. Lily Wilcock is now working with them to schedule interviews with various stakeholders. She is using the following message:
In efforts to improve the experience and safety of our programs, we will be reimagining the Bike at Illinois website. Our first step involves learning about our key audiences so we can determine how we can best serve them online. We’re asking for participants who are willing to give 1 hour interview to our creative team, who will be asking a series of questions and collecting some key insights. This will help us determine what services and information is available, how to best present these in a website, and how we can improve your experience with us in the future.
Creative Services will start work on a new Bike@Illinois website on behalf of Facilities & Services this winter, as described in the attached agreement.
