  1. Energy and Sustainability project presentations

Energy and sustainability engineering poster sessions

Join us for poster sessions on Monday, April 30, and Wednesday, May 2, from 3-4 p.m. in Transportation Building room 114, during the course ENG 571 – Theory of Energy and Sustainability Engineering. View posters and speak with graduate student authors concerning their term project findings in many topics associated with energy and sustainability issues.

  2. Stewarding Excellence Reports

In 2010, the Chancellor's Office coordinated a program called "Stewarding Excellence." This process formed teams about key financial issues on campus, and developed reports on Next Steps to make improvements.  The files for Utilities and Space are both posted here.  The full list is available online at http://oc.illinois.edu/budget/.

  3. Archived info - previous project description

Energy conservation is considered the easiest and most cost-effective way to achieve reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Opportunities for conservation on campus are great. In order to reduce emissions, the Climate Action Plan has laid out potential energy savings on campus in areas such as lighting, building commissioning, fume hoods, behavioral change and incentives, and information technology. All of these areas are prospective energy saving components and can contribute to a more sustainable campus.

More specifically, the iCAP said the University would implement decentralized energy billing at the college level in 2011, attain a 30 percent reduction in total building energy use (excluding the National Petascale Computing Facility) by fiscal year 2020 as compared to fiscal year 2008, and attain a 30 percent reduction in associated building related emissions. The iCAP also said that appropriate maintenance levels would be allocated to ensure that energy reductions are sustained.

Several SWATeam recommendations were discussed.  Also, an update from the Sustainability Council was provided:

"Review of Council Meeting/Status of iCAP Approval - The Sustainability Council meeting went very well with lots of good discussion. There were not too many serious objections to the iCAP. They would like to see financial information, such as cost-benefit analysis on projects. This information will be included in the study for accelerating our carbon neutrality date. The cover letter from the Chancellor affirming our commitment will include language about the current fiscal climate in Illinois. The Chancellor was keen to be able to reach carbon neutrality by 2035. Other concerns were in regard to the net zero space item and they suggested a space audit be included in the iCAP."

  6. FY14 Energy Consumption Report

    Campus Leaders:

Energy conservation continues to be an important initiative in support of the Campus Strategic Plan as well as a critical component for meeting our sustainability commitments in concert with the Illinois Climate Action Plan (ICAP). To give you some scale about our overall energy use, it’s the annual equivalent energy use of over 52,000 homes and that doesn’t include Petascale.

Our conservation programs have been very successful for the campus to date with a 24% Energy Use Intensity Reduction since 2008. Our success has been a campus wide effort through user based conservation efforts and centralized programs like retrocommissioning, lighting retrofits, and Energy Performance Contracting which all require a partnership between F&S and campus units. An initiative that we started last year to reward conservation at the facility level is the Energy Conservation Incentive Program (ECIP). We’ll be announcing the FY14 ECIP winners this Wednesday during the Sustainability Forum at the Illini Union.

In order to keep you informed about conservation efforts at the unit level, we’ve developed the attached Campus Energy Report. It provides data and trends about your overall energy use for the last four years. It essentially breaks down the 24% number I referenced above by unit. We’re providing this as one more tool to help you communicate with your organization about the results you’re achieving and to support new and ongoing conservation initiatives.

If you or your staff has questions about how this information was developed, details at the facility level, or best practices from other units, you can contact our Energy Services Business Office at (217) 245-4676.

  7. The Illinois Energy Enterprise

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is looking to the future and developing a strategy to meet the evolving energy needs of the campus. After several years of addressing deficiencies in utility production, distribution, and monitoring, the campus is proactively shaping its energy enterprise. The university is uniquely positioned to serve as a large-scale laboratory to test theories and potential technological advancements through collaboration with faculty members, researchers, and industry partners.
