Hi Pete and Shawn—

Zero waste activities for the past week were as follows: 

• Morgan and I had a phone meeting to go over next steps on the glove recycling program, now that the trailer is planned to be relocated. We'll revise the map on the program handout once we receive confirmation of the new location.
• I prepared a contact spreadsheet for the BER volunteers who stepped forward to help with outreach for the glove recycling program. It lists departments with $2,000 or more in nitrile glove purchases for the first three quarters of fiscal year 2017-2018. I sent it to the volunteers, along with instructions for them to look up contact names, emails, and phone numbers for the departments. Once the trailer map is revised, we'll ask them to start calling and emailing the departments. I attach the list so you can see it. I updated the iCAP portal with the information that the volunteers will assist with outreach. 
• I viewed a CURC webinar on bin infrastructure and forwarded slides and notes to Morgan.

Hi Pete and Shawn—

Here is a summary of zero-waste activity from this past week: 

• I completed a draft Architecture Review Committee proposal for replacing trash bins with dual bins in the core campus area. It is with Morgan for her comments.
• The BER student volunteers have been in touch. Two of them are available over the summer to review the OBFS/Purchasing report of departments that purchase gloves. They will use the campus directory to identify initial contact people in the departments so that they and/or other volunteers can reach out to departments that are not yet participating in the glove recycling program. I will prepare the report for their use by deleting departments that are already participating and those that purchase only small amounts of gloves (under $2,000 for the year covered by the report). 
• I emailed Joe Pickowitz to see if the vendors have provided parts for the EPS densifier yet. He was also making inquiries about obtaining throughput data for the machine.

• A call with Morgan to move the glove recycling materials along. I followed up with revisions to some of the graphics we are using.
• Morgan and I also discussed a write-up I am working on for the Architecture Review Committee regarding the replacement of the outdoor concrete trash bins with dual trash-and-recycling bins.

Morgan and I had a phone call Friday to go over what I’ll focus on in the remaining couple of months of my position, which ends July 31: I will get revised glove recycling materials to her, wrap up the iCAP Portal glove recycling site, contact the student volunteers who offered to help recruit departments to participate in that program, and assist with reporting zero- waste activities to the Student Sustainability Committee.

Hi Pete and Shawn—

Last week was a quiet week with regard to zero-waste activities. I managed to reach Jonathan McClintock at Kimberly- Clark and forwarded the following information to Morgan: 

• Jonathan spoke with Serenity Desmond on April 4. She can handle gloves from Noyes only. The gloves are going directly from Noyes to K-C. Noyes is not currently paying for the pickups but that may change, although K-C would give them rebates for free gloves if they pay. 
• People typically purchase gloves by the case. An average weight for a case is 20 lbs. 
• The program is really intended to be used at stocking centers. Jonathan has been in touch with store rooms on campus but has not gotten any of them on board yet. He will send me the contact names so Morgan and I can discuss how we might approach them. 
• Jonathan will send me the most recent statistics on how quantities of gloves collected from UIUC. The statistics will include what has been collected from Noyes. 

I have not yet received the contact names or statistics from Jonathan but will keep an eye out for them this week.

Here’s the past week’s zero-waste activity: 

• Jeremiah Yokley from Purchasing replied to me and will re-run the glove purchasing report to show purchases from the Urbana campus only. He confirmed that the report is for iBuy purchases, not for all purchases across the campus.
• I have still not heard back from Kimberly-Clark regarding the questions I'd sent about Noyes as a pick-up site. I will phone Jonathan McClintock this week, since the couple of times I've tried to reach him by email have not been effective.
• I sent a revised (possibly final) version of the glove recycling flier to Morgan and Anna.

Hi Pete and Shawn—

This past week 

• Morgan and I had a phone call to catch up on glove recycling. We are still sorting out the situation at Noyes, as they seem to have an independent arrangement with Kimberly Clark for glove pick-up. I am also trying to see if they would allow one of the labs from RAL to drop glove off there. A post-doc from the lab at RAL is interested in having the lab participate but can’t get the gloves to PPSB. 
• I asked Morgan and Anna for feedback on an online glove recycling participation form to go on the relevant iCAP portal page. I also sent content for an informational flier which will eventually be posted on the site.

Hi Pete and Shawn—

Here are my zero-waste coordination updates from this past week: 

• I met with two students from Business in Environmental Responsibility, a campus RSO. They are interested in volunteering to help with the glove recycling program. Not many of their members have cars, so they are not in a good position to assist with transporting gloves from collection sites to the trailer at PPSB, so we talked about help they might give with identifying locations on campus that use disposable gloves. I will consult with Morgan on whether we might use that information to promote the program more broadly across campus.
• A lab in RAL is working on becoming a participating location. They are very interested but would like assistance with transporting gloves to PPSB. I will consult with Morgan on whether we have any options for them.
• I contacted Rebecca Seymour, who manages the campus Starbuck’s locations. She is moving forward with providing used coffee grounds to John McNally, a local farmer who can use them for fertilizer. He had inquired about payment for providing transportation to pick them up, but we don’t have any funds for it. Nonetheless, he and Rebecca are moving forward with the arrangement, starting with the Starbuck’s located in the Illini Union. My contacts with the Sustainable Student Farm and a few other local farmers and the Urbana Park District’s gardening program did not result in any additional interest in the program. One or two contacts indicated that they could use the grounds but would need them to be delivered.
• I updated the glove recycling page in the iCAP Portal to show that Krannert Art Museum is participating.
