Grind2Energy: Turning Campus Food Waste into Fuel
The 49,000 students educated at the University of Illinois can generate a lot of food waste. Most of it winds up in a landfill. But for students with a dining hall plan, food waste is ultimately turned into energy, helping the campus reduce its carbon footprint.
With the "Grind2Energy" system, food scraps are ground down and ultimately run through an anaerobic digester at the Urbana-Champaign Sanitary District, producing methane that is used for fuel to power the plant. The system was installed at Florida Avenue Residence Halls last fall, and others are in the works.
"Hopefully this small piece will be part of a bigger system down the road," said Thurman Etchison, Assistant Director of Housing Dining Services for Equipment and Facilities.
James Carter - programming & operations manager with Ann Arbor Summer Festival (A2SF) - will discuss how they implemented a dramatic waste management transformation, created educational opportunities, and presented community-collaborative art programming. The operational goal? To become a zero waste event with 90% landfill diversion over three years.

I sent them to Morgan so that she can integrate any of them that are useful into the F&S feedback to iWG. This past week, Julija Sakutyte put me in touch with Tim Stark to discuss input on the new iCAP. I had suggested that addressing the issue of transporting recyclable materials from the point where they are generated to centralized collection points would help boost departments' participation. I know we've touched on this issue in regards to EPS and glove recycling and had an inquiry about getting toner cartridges as well. I've reached out directly to Tim to talk about the best way to frame the suggestion for iCAP.
I have also received the Zero Waste SWATeam objectives from Julija and will review them by the team's Dec. 2 deadline.

Any meeting minutes from October 2019 or November 2019 may reference the following categories:
There will be a revised version by the end of the 2019 Fall Semester after iWG gives feedback for the SWATeams to revise.
The 22 October meeting was a finalization to the 2020 iCAP October Final Objectives from the Zero Waste SWATeam. Please reference the document submitted to this page on the iCAP portal.

I also reviewed the Zero Waste SWATeam iCAP recommendations and submitted a comment regarding the need for transportation resources for departments to enable them to move recyclable materials to centralized collection/drop-off points.
