  1. ZW001 Student Sustainability Ambassador Program - Successful

Dr. Evan DeLucia, Director of iSEE, sent Meredith Moore the following email:
    --

    Good morning, Meredith

I’ve had a chance to review the iWG recommendations and discuss them with iSEE leadership. Both recommendations, the Environmental Leadership Program and Student Sustainability Ambassadors are creative, will provide students with new opportunities to engage in sustainability learning, and will have a positive impact on our iCAP goals.

The iWG should be aware that we are launching test modules as part of the leadership program this fall semester. iSEE has hired a coordinator to develop several learning modules, likely full day programs, on topics such as ‘environmental communications’ and ‘effective interviewing strategies’. We will use these modules to recruit faculty into the program, build partnerships, evaluate financial expenses, and evaluate student interest. If all goes well, these modules will serve as the components of full program. Once we have a better sense of the curriculum, we can also initiate fund raising activities.

The ambassadors program has real promise to advance campus’ iCAP goals and to more fully engage students in sustainability activities. That said, iSEE is not prepared to launch this program at this time. Not for lack of merit, but rather for lack of bandwidth. To properly launch the leadership program mentioned above is a significant undertaking and we want to make sure we do it well. While iSEE is not prepared to launch this program at this time, we will take an initial step to explore its viability by discussing the proposed course offering with NRES.

Please extend my thanks to the iWG and the SWATeams for their dedication to making Illinois more sustainable.

  3. ZW001 Student Sustainability Ambassador Program - Submitted

The Zero Waste SWATeam made the following recommendation on 4/3/2020:

We are recommending a pilot program for what we are calling the Student Sustainability Ambassadors initiative. The main idea is to have teams assigned to buildings – one team per building - on campus with student volunteers playing a central role in these teams. Other members of each team: the Building Manager, one or two Zero Waste Contacts in each building (i.e. staff or faculty volunteers in each building from a list of campus contacts that the ZW Coordinator will put together with a view to promoting ZW.)

The focus of each team: all aspects that are relevant to whether a building is being operated sustainably with attention to the actions of people in the building. This includes reducing waste, increasing recycling, sustainable purchasing, natural landscaping, energy use, amount of printing that is done, and so on. A large focus will be placed on relating these components to the iCAP goals and objectives.

Student Sustainability Ambassadors will speak with people who work in the building about issues they notice and about how they use the building. They will work to quantify waste/energy/resources used/etc. in their assigned building. They will help to inform people in the assigned building about all matters pertaining to sustainability including issues at the campus level, in particular the goals of iSEE and F&S. They will also work to provide solutions to problems they identify in their buildings.

Collaboration between the Zero Waste SWATeam, iSEE Communications team, and the University Ethics Office will result in training questions and videos to be included in the annual Ethics Training for staff and faculty.

See iWG assessment of PWR014 Sustainability Ethics Training attached.  The iWG recommends: "Council: We would like to pilot this as an optional, five minute addendum to the annual Ethics Traning. SWATeams: Work with the ethics office and iWG to recmmend questions by the end of October 2019."

See SWATeam Recommendation PWR014 Sustainability Ethics Training here.

  12. PWR017 Housing Representative for Zero Waste SWATeam - Successful

University Housing Director, Alma Sealine, responded over email to Morgan White (Associate Director of F&S, Sustainability) in regards to the recommendation: "I support the recommendation."

From this point on, Housing will be represented on the new Zero Waste SWATeam by Assistant Director of Dining Services Thurman Etchison.

See SWATeam recommendation PWR017 Housing Representative for Zero Waste SWATeam here.

  13. PWR016 Motion Sensor Lighting - Submittal

The PWR SWATeam compiled the following recommendation:

"The PWR & ECBS SWATeams kindly request the installation of Motion Sensor Lighting in all buildings. This would be done gradually so F&S does not become burdened by the switch. The main targets for motion sensor lighting in buildings would be public spaces, lobbies, hallways, stairwells, rest rooms,
    discussion/collaboration spaces, classrooms, etc.
    • In conjunction with ECBS, PWR would like to recommend that all campus buildings be gradually retrofitted to use motion sensor lighting wherever possible, as well as enforce the policy for new buildings and remodels to use motion sensor lighting. We suggest that the installation of motion sensors should be the
default option and to be pursued unless there is a reason not to do so.
    • This switch would occur during mainly during replacement and upgrading of light switches in all buildings and or during remodeling. Such a switch needs to be implemented gradually, replacing the current switches as they stop working or become obsolete, which will lower energy usage.
    • The University would procure the motion sensors through a contracted vendor like Grainger or HD Supply. Ordering in bulk, which would give Purchasing more leverage to negotiate a bulk discount."

See attached the SWATeam recommendation PWR016 Motion Sensor Lighting with comments from PWR SWATeam members.

An iCAP Working Group assessment of this recommendation began on July 2, 2019.

  14. PWR017 Housing Representative for Zero Waste SWATeam - Transmitted

The PWR SWATeam submitted a recommendation asking the following:

"PWR kindly requests the addition of a member from the Student Housing Department to the PWRSWATeam. Ideally, this person would be a director or associate director so that planning and initiatives will receive attention at the highest level and be disseminated effectively."

As a recommendation with minor impact, and because a switch for former ALUFS SWATeam member and Assistant Director of Dining Services Thurman Etchison to the new Zero Waste team was already planned, it was transmitted directly to iWG member and University Housing Director Alma Sealine.

Morgan White wrote in the transmission:

"As you know, we are modifying the SWATeam structure this year and we have asked Thurman to shift from the previous Agriculture, Food, Land Use, and Sequestration (ALUFS) SWATeam to the Zero Waste SWATeam. He agrees with this change and said “Please count me in” per the attached email.

Please take a moment to reply and confirm that Housing is able to provide a Housing representative on the Zero Waste SWATeam this coming year."

See attached the SWATeam recommendation PWR017 Housing Representative complete with comments from PWR SWATeam members.

  15. PWR018 iBUY Modification - Submittal

The PWR SWATeam submitted a recommendation asking the following:

"The PWR SWATeam kindly requests that the following four improvements be made in the iBUY shopping dashboard.
    • Prioritize sustainable products (e.g. office paper, cleaning products) in the catalogue.
    • Prioritize sustainable and smart electronics (e.g. computers, monitors, TV’s, etc), that are certified as energy-efficient (Energy Star and EPEAT (Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool), rated computers and electronics to reduce energy consumption).
    • Develop a more logical search mechanism for the website so sustainable products are found quicker and prioritized.
    • Simplify “punchout vendor” catalogs and make them emphasize sustainable products."

See attached the SWATeam recommendation PWR018 iBuy Modification complete with comments from PWR SWATeam members.

An iCAP Working Group assessment of the recommendation began on July 2, 2019.

  16. PWR015 Lightbulb Replacement - Submittal

The PWR SWATeam compiled the following recommendation:

"The PWR & ECBS SWATeams suggest a switch from conventional incandescent light bulbs to LED or CFL light bulbs
    • This switch would occur during REPLACEMENT of expired bulbs in all buildings and/or during remodeling. Such a switch needs to be implemented gradually, i.e., replacing the current incandescent lightbulbs as they stop working, with lower energy and longer life CFL bulbs."

See attached the SWATeam recommendation PWR015 Lightbulb Replacement with comments from PWR SWATeam members.

An iCAP Working Group assessment of this recommendation began on July 2, 2019.

  17. PWR020 F&S Waste Report Endorsement - Submittal

The PWR SWATeam submitted a recommendation asking the following:

"The PWR SWATeam respectfully requests iSEE to fully support the eight (8) recommendations stipulated in the F&S Indoor Solid Waste and Recycling Collection Report."

See attached the SWATeam recommendation PWR020 F&S Waste Report Endorsement complete with comments from PWR SWATeam members.

An iCAP Working Group assessment of the recommendation began on July 2, 2019.

  18. PWR019 Sustainable Procurement - Submittal

The PWR SWATeam submitted a recommendation asking the following:

"The PWR SWATeam kindly requests that all products that are purchased using university funds be in accordance with Section 44 of the Administrative Code, Procurement Rules for Institutes of Higher Education, Section 4.4520 “Recycled Supplies” and 4.4525 “Recyclable Supplies (Paper)”). Additional relevant sections of the Administrative Code, Procurement Rules are presented at the end of this Recommendation.

Currently these parts of the Administrative Code are difficult to enforce due to direct department access to University contracted iBuy vendor catalogs. In an attempt to gain process efficiencies, these transactions can be made without the oversight of the purchasing office. To increase compliance, the purchasing office should work with contracted vendors to modify iBuy catalogs to prioritize and promote the sale of sustainable supplies. See relevant sections of the Administrative Code, Procurement Rules shown at the end of this recommendation.

This could be facilitated by the Zero Waste Coordinator, who would work with Purchasing to monitor compliance with the code and to follow-up with campus units that are not in compliance with the code.

Additionally, the possibility of purchasing centralization should remain open for consideration in the
future to achieve compliance with Section 44 of Administrative Code."

See attached the SWATeam recommendation PWR019 Sustainable Procurement complete with comments from PWR SWATeam members.

An iCAP Working Group assessment of the recommendation began on July 2, 2019.
