John Francis Pizzo and Pizzo & Associates, Ltd. granted the University of Illinois Foundation and Board of Trustees design services, seed, and labor for the creation of a prairie zone at the corner of Florida Avenue and Orchard Street in Urbana. The gift was estimated to be a $20,000 value.
One simple and frequent method for spreading safety information related to bicycles is a printed or digital poster. As campus transitions to more and more digital signs, the bicycle education materials are transitioning to digital displays. This reduces paper waste, with a minimal increase in energy use.
The cities of Urbana and Champaign worked together to produce a bicycle education video to introduce the public to the bicycle infrastructure that is being installed around both cities and to teach motorists and bicyclists how to interact with each other on the road.
This 14 minute video, entitled C-U Sharing the Road was filmed on local C-U streets and features many local C-U bicyclists. The video was filmed, edited, and produced by Urbana Public Television.

The mission of the Center for a Sustainable Environment (CSE), formerly the Office of Sustainability (OS) and the Environmental Change Institute (ECI), was to provide assistance to the University in providing national and international leadership on sustainability by supporting education, research, and engagement and to develop and implement strategies for a sustainable campus environment.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign was the first recipient of an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Large Customer grant. The University received over $848,000 to spend on campus-wide energy conservation projects. The project will save the University more than $1 million each year in energy costs. The ARRA grant was administered by the Illinois Energy Office in the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.
The Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) has a program called the Illinois Energy Efficiency Portfolio Standard (EEPs) that provides incentives and/or funding for projects that promote energy efficiency in local, state, and federal government facilities; public schools; community colleges; public universities; and colleges.
The Foundation's lighting programs continue to assist Illinois communities improve lighting quality and lower utility bills by the simple act of replacing old light fixtures with high efficiency bulbs and ballasts. Over 4,000 buildings have been upgraded, leading to electricity demand savings of over 130 megawatts.

With fewer bus stops, the transit riders alighting from the buses can be better protected through campus infrastructure.
