  2. Water006 Lot F23 Monitoring - Transmitted

    Following the completion of iWG assessment for Water006 Lot F23 Monitoring, the recommendation was transmitted back to the Water SWATeam so that a proposal for funding this project may be submitted to the Student Sustainability Committee.

  3. Water006 Lot F23 Monitoring - Submittal

    The WSW SWATeam submitted a recommendation to the iWG, stating: 

    "The Water/Stormwater SWATTeam recommends that instrumentation to monitor the quality and quantity of runoff from parking lot F23 should be installed in the storm sewer carrying runoff from the lot. An instrumentation vault was installed at the southeast corner of the lot (where the storm sewer leaves the lot) several years ago, but no instrumentation installed. In order to demonstrate the impact of Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI), this instrumentation should be installed and operational for at least one year before GSI is installed on the lot to provide a baseline to compare the post -installation runoff quality and quantity. We suggest a pressure transducer to record continuous water level (providing the flow rate using a calibrated stage-flow rating), a water-quality multiprobe with sensors for: turbidity, nitrate, pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature, specific conductivity, fluorescent dye (which will be used to develop the stage-flow rating). The location would also need a data logger to record the measurements, and auxiliary components such as power supply and shelter."

  4. Water007 SeeClickFix - Submittal

    The WSW SWATeam submitted a recommendation to the iWG, stating: 

    "SeeClickFix is an application that is used by citizens of both Champaign and Urbana to report damaged or underperforming infrastructure to their local public works departments for repair. According to this application, 2498 issues were fixed all time in Champaign, and 27 have been resolved in Urbana. In similar fashion, the University has a few options to crowd-source data about infrastructure problems:

    1. Facilities and Services (F&S) can set up their own account as the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign through the service to cut out the need to communicate directly with the two cities. This would most likely be the more costly option, but would be quick and require no third-party effort.
    2. F&S could collaborate with Champaign and Urbana to receive information about infrastructure problems that fall under the campus’ jurisdiction. This option would likely be cheaper than having a subscription, but cooperation with the cities would be pivotal.
    3. Through student-led projects, develop a campus-specific application and database. In this case, spatial data and data about the kind of problem can be incorporated with GIS and would be more readily available to the campus community. Water specific data could be used to determine the optimum locations for green stormwater infrastructure."

  5. Water004 GSI Standards Parking Lots recommendation - Successful

    Executive Director of Facilities & Services, Mohammed Atalla, responded over email to Ximing Cai (iSEE Associate Director for Campus Sustainability) in support of the recommendation:

    "Facilities & Services will proceed with incorporating Green Stormwater Infrastructure in to the Facility Standards. Brent Lewis is the point person for this effort, and he will add GSI information to each of the relevant standards. This includes but is not limited to the sections on parking lots, transportation, sustainability, and stormwater.

    Thank you very much Morgan for your work to coordinate this activity with Jim and Brent."

  6. Water005 Rainworks Design Lot F4 recommendation - Successful

    Director of Parking at the University of Illinois, Marty Paulins, responded over email to Ximing Cai (iSEE Associate Director for Campus Sustainability) in support of the recommendation:

    "Parking supports the recommendation to do a feasibility study for Lot F4, incorporating the green infrastructure from the conceptualization completed by the students in the award winning rainworks challenge."

  7. Water004 GSI Standards Parking Lots recommendation - Assessment started

    The iCAP Working Group (iWG) met on May 10, 2018, to discuss and start the assessment of Water004 GSI Standards Parking Lots recommendation. The iWG's draft assessment was:

    "F&S should include the minimum requirements of Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) in the Facilities Standards, as described in the Campus Master Plan."

  8. Water005 Rainworks Design Lot F4 recommendation - Assessment started

    The iCAP Working Group (iWG) met on May 10, 2018, to discuss and start the discussion on SWATeam recommendation, Water005 Rainworks Design Lot F4. The iWG's draft comment on the recommendation was:

    "Do a feasibility study for lot F4, incorporating the green infrastructure from the conceptualization completed by the students in the award winning rainworks challenge. Potential funding could be requested from the Student Sustainability Committee (SSC)."

  9. Water005 Rainworks Design Lot F4 recommendation - Submittal

    The Water and Stormwater SWATeam submitted a recommendation, to the iWG, stating, "The appropriate campus units (Parking, Facilities and Services) should begin the process of implementing the award winning green stormwater redesign for parking Lot F4."

  10. Water004 GSI Standards Parking Lots recommendation - Submittal

    The Water and Stormwater SWATeam submitted a recommendation to the iWG, stating, "The Facilities and Services Standards for Parking and for Stormwater Systems should be revised to include a greater emphasis on sustainable design Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) for stormwater management. This revision will align these standards with the newly adopted 2017 Campus Master Plan."

  11. Water005 Rainworks Design Lot F4 recommendation - Transmittal

    The iCAP Working Group transmitted the Water SWATeam recommendation to do a feasibility study for implementing the award winning RainWorks Challenge student design in parking lot F4 on campus.

  12. Water001 BIF Greywater Meter recommendation - Transmittal

    Following the completion of iWG assessment of Water001 BIF Greywater Meter, the recommendation was transmitted to the Facilities & Services (F&S) department on July 12, 2017.

  13. Water001 BIF Greywater Meter recommendation - Assessment with comments

    The iCAP Working Group (iWG) met on December 20, 2016, to discuss and start the assessment of SWATeam recommendation, Water001 BIF Greywater Meter. The iWG's official comment on the recommendation was:

    "A permanent real-time water meter should be installed on the greywater piping system in BIF, and the collected data should be made available in the Energy Billing System and through an online dashboard."

  14. Water003 Design Center Greywater Piping recommendation - Denied

    The iCAP Working Group (iWG) met on December 20, 2016, to discuss the SWATeam recommendation, Water003 Design Center Greywater Piping. After some discussion, the iWG rejected this recommendation.

  15. Water003 Design Center Greywater Piping recommendation - Submittal

    The Water and Stormwater SWATeam submitted a recommendation to the iWG stating,

    "We recommend that the Siebel Design Center should be designed to include plumbing to supply non-potable water to be used for toilet flushing. The system could be connected to the potable water supply until such time as a viable non-potable source (e.g., the campus raw-water lines) is available. At that time the non-potable lines could be connected to the non-potable source at a small expense. We also recommend that a meter be installed to monitor the amount of water delivered to the non-potable system and that these data be made available on the Dashboard operated by Facilities and Services."

  16. Water002 Cooling Tower Increase COC recommendation - Submittal

    The Water and Stormwater SWATeam submitted a recommendation to the iWG stating,

    "We recommend that a small tonnage (< 700 tons cooling capacity) stand-alone cooling tower on campus operating at a water concentration cycle of less than 2.5 be operated using softened water under high pH/high silica conditions to demonstrate near zero blowdown operation."

  17. Water001 BIF Greywater Meter recommendation - Submittal

    The Water and Stormwater SWATeam submitted a recommendation to the iWG stating, 

    "Monitoring the water usage in the Business Instructional Facility (BIF). Specifically, both the total water use and the amount of water used by the raw water system should be measured and the data made available to the campus community.

    BIF is unique in that it was constructed with a separate raw water system that conveys non-potable water to be used for purposes such as flushing toilets. While the system is in place inside the building, it was never connected to an outside source of non-potable water. Use of non-potable water for purposes such as toilet flushing, landscape irrigation, cooling, etc. is recognized as a sustainable practice (e.g., Asano et al, 2007; EPA, 2012). Data to quantify the impact this could have on water use at UIUC, however, is largely unavailable. Metering the raw water system at BIF would provide data about the temporal total and non-potable water demand at a typical campus class/office building. These data would be valuable to consider whether such systems should be considered in future campus construction and renovation.

    F&S installed a temporary meter to measure the flow to the raw water system and operated this meter for approximately one month (April – May 2016), so this recommendation has already been demonstrated to be feasible. However, because building usage is highly variable over the course of an academic year, we recommend that this should be a permanent installation. We also recommend that the data be made available to the campus community to encourage consideration of such water reuse options."
