In lab buildings, protective gloves can be a major component of the waste stream. For example, at the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center (ISTC), plastic gloves were found to be over 8% of their total waste by weight. There is a recycling program for nitrile gloves that can be purchased through Fisher Scientific, for Kimberely-Clark nitrile gloves. This program is being implemented at various locations across campus.
Pursuing Resources for Transporting Gloves to Trailer
Associated Project(s):Having a resource to transport gloves from the locations where they are used to the centralized collection point (a trailer at the Physical Plant) would help boost participation in the glove recycling program. Staff and volunteer resources are being explored at present.
Glove recycling informational materials and signage under review
Associated Project(s):Content for an informational flier, web page, and signage to cooridnate and promote the Right Cycle program on campus is drafted and being reviewed.
Glove recycling informational materials and signage under development
Associated Project(s):Development of materials for units that want to participate in the campus glove recycling program is under way. The current plan is to provide a web page with information about the program, a web form for units to let F&S know of their participation, and links to signage and other informational materials.

MTD’s 2017-18 service year began yesterday and new Maps & Schedules books are now available on our buses and at Illinois Terminal. Pick up yours today & let us know if you have any questions-just call 217.384.8188 or email us.
In addition to a few timetable and routing adjustments, our passengers and the public should be aware of several larger changes this year: MTD has moved to a Designated Stops system, Round Barn Road in Champaign is now the main transfer point for routes in west Champaign, and MCORE project work will continue to cause reroutes in and around Campustown.
School trips for Unit 4 and District 116 middle and high schoolers will begin this Wednesday, August 16, and just prior to University of Illinois classes beginning Monday, August 28, all summer service reductions will end on Friday, August 25.

MTD's Fall 2017 Service Year began on Sunday, August 13, 2017, the same day our new Maps & Schedules book went into effect.
One major change this fall is the introduction of system-wide designated stops. Several Open Houses were held to solicit input from the public, and MTD staff compiled and incorporated the comments into our planning process. A full list of designated stops locations and maps are available at cumtd.com in our "Documents" section under Designated Stops Fall 2017.

Illinois Terminal Expansion Announced
Developer Hans Grotelueschen’s major downtown Champaign project once sited at Washington and Walnut streets will move several blocks south and east to merge with a planned expansion of Illinois Terminal by the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District (MTD).
As part of a new vision for this development, Grotelueschen and MTD officials are also evaluating a hockey arena and athletics event center for approximately 5000 spectators. In so doing, they hope to partner with the University of Illinois Division of Intercollegiate Athletics (DIA), which recently announced that it was studying the feasibility of adding Division I ice hockey. Associated Project(s):The storage container has arrived, for collecting recyclable gloves from various places on campus. The SWATeam is working on spreading awareness of this program and implementation protocols.
Award Letter - Baseline Waste Characterization
Associated Project(s):The primary deliverable of this proposed project is to provide a detailed waste characterization assessment for three facilities located throughout the Urbana-Champaign campus of the University of Illinois. Lincoln Avenue Residence Halls (LAR), Business Instructional Facility (BIF), Roger Adams Laboratory(RAL) are facilities that will be characterized.
This proposal builds upon the initial waste characterizations conducted in the Spring of 2013 for four buildings: Henry Administration Building, Alice Campbell Alumni Center, Swanlund Administration Building, and Illini Union Bookstore.
The objective of the assessments is to characterize the waste generated from a Lab building, a classroom building and a housing building. The primary goal of the waste stream characterization study is to provide UIUC with an accurate and precise baseline measurement of the solid waste generated at each facility type. ISTC will assist F&S in identifying and implementing practices and technologies that will reduce waste, increase landfill diversion, increase recycling revenues, and decrease waste disposal costs. These efforts will help UIUC to become an example of a sustainable campus, and will provide new learning and teaching opportunities for the university and community at large. Michael at Housing just got another Gaylord full of gloves ready to ship at dining services. Making the total pounds of gloves recycled at Dining to over 1000lbs in just four months!

Associated Project(s):Housing has been piloting the glove recycling program for about four weeks now. LAR, PRI, and MRL are all considering implementing the program. Kimberly-Clarke Professionals (KCP) is interested in potentially supporting an intern to help expand the program.
If everyone on campus recycled their KCP gloves it would be about 20 tons of landfill reduced.
Nitrile Glove Recycling at Ikenberry Commons
Associated Project(s):Today recycling containers were placed on the trash bin at Ikenberry Commons. The purpose is to collect and recycle all the nitrile gloves used by food service employees. The weight of the gloves will be recorded to measure environmental impact.
Bike rack made from recycled gloves on display at ISTC
Associated Project(s):ISTC now has a Bike Rack made out of recycled gloves on display in their atrium. This is an example of what can be created with the gloves recycled through the Kimberly-Clark glove recycling program.
Nitrile Glove Recycling
Associated Project(s):The Nitrile Glove Recycling Program is an expansion of a preliminary pilot program performed by the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center (ISTC). The initial pilot program collected gloves used in the laboratory setting in one central location. Gloves were collected from individual ISTC laboratories once a week into a larger collection container, and were stockpiled until there was sufficient volume to ship to the supplier. This project expands the pilot test to several more buildings on campus as a stepping stone to eventually serving the entire campus.
David Guth requests funding for Kitchen Hoods
Associated Project(s):Daivd Guth has requested SSC approval for a project with the Kitchen Exhaust Hoods at the Union. Morgan Johnston and Karl Helmink called Marques Burris to discuss the next steps for getting David the funds. Marques planned to contact SSC chair, Amy Liu, and then reach out to David Guth.
Shantanu is adding two Lab buildings for glove recycling
Associated Project(s):Blake Ashley from Kimberley Clark spoke with Shantanu Pai. Blake said they thought we are doing Labs, and Shantanu is going to work on implementing it at RAL, CLSL, and Housing. Tanya from Fisher is working with Shantanu on this project. RAL has a meeting being scheduled on June 23.
