Description

One of the points discussed in the Purchasing/ Waste/ Recycling goal of the 2010 iCAP was to expand the reuse of durable goods. Several strategies were discussed in relation to this point, including reversing the state law that disallows the University to resell used goods to the public and improve the internal reuse programs.

The current disposal system involves several steps, in which durable goods are first redistributed at the Campus level, then sent back to the State via the Illinois Department of Central Management Services (CMS) if the state has interest in the goods, and finally sold for scrap or given to other State agencies where profit is given back to the State. This system is effective in that few people are involved in handling the durable goods and there is rarely duplication of effort. However, the current system is problematic in the constraints the state property disposition process puts upon the goods when they are sold or donated outside of the University campus.
