Project Description
FY18 RCx

In FY18, the Retrocommissioning teams addressed deferred maintanence in the following buildings.

Illini Union 104 & 222 Lighting

The Illini Union currently has two rooms that are using outdated lighting fixtures. Rooms 104 and 222 of the Illini Union are utilized extensively throughout the day. Both rooms maintain a high level of foot traffic and visibility within the building. An assessment team concluded that transitioning the old lighting fixtures to LED would have an overwhelmingly positive impact on energy consumption and unnecessary waste.

Transportation Alternatives

Structural and Architectural Engineering and Materials (SAEM)

SAEM aims to enable sustainable buildings and other structures that can be continuously occupied and/or operated during the structure’s useful life. The SAEM program supports fundamental research for advancing knowledge and innovation in structural and architectural engineering and materials that promotes a holistic approach to analysis and design, construction, operation, maintenance, retrofit, and repair of structures.

Smart and Connected Communities (S&CC)

The goal of this Smart & Connected Communities (S&CC) solicitation is to support strongly interdisciplinary, integrative research and research capacity-building activities that will improve understanding of smart and connected communities and lead to discoveries that enable sustainable change to enhance community functioning

Waste Stream Characterization Study Phase 2

The primary deliverable of this proposed project is to provide a detailed waste characterization assessment for three facilities located throughout the Urbana-Champaign campus of the University of Illinois. Lincoln Avenue Residence Halls (LAR), Business Instructional Facility (BIF), Roger Adams Laboratory(RAL) are facilities that will be characterized.

Multimodal Corridor Enhancement Project (MCORE)

The Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District (MTD), City of Champaign, City of Urbana, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are partnering to improve mobility in our communities core through a federal Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant. The $35M MCORE Project is unprecedented in our community’s history and will have a transformative impact.

MCORE Project construction is anticipated to start in September of 2016 and continue into 2019, covering five separate project areas to improve key urban transportation corridors.

Illini Union Revolving Loan Pool

The Student Sustainability Committee (SSC) and the Illini Union collaborate on sustainability projects that take place at the Illini Union, through the Illini Union Revolving Loan Pool.

Sustainability Meet and Greet Coffees

At the beginning of Fall 2013, the Center for a Sustainable Environment is hosting a series of Sustainability Meet and Greet coffees to facilitate campus-wide discussion and interest about sustainability efforts on campus and in the community.  These are spread over the entire work week, with coffee and snacks being offered Monday through Friday at the Illini Union from 10-11 each morning.  By offering the event multiple times during the week, it is hoped that more campus students, faculty, and staff will be able to participate.

Glove Recycling

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign participates in Kimberly-Clark’s RightCycle Program.

Illini Union Audit and Retrofits

An Energy Audit and Retrofitting of the Illini Union was funded by the Student Sustainability Committee in 2006. In 2007, the Smart Energy Design Assistance Center (SEDAC) completed the audit with help from students. As suggested by the audit, lighting retrofits are planned for the Union. The total cost of these retrofits is $90,000, but they will save the Union $28,900 per year in electricity costs. Retrofits will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 469 tons per year.
